The Carceral Cultures Research Initiative and the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel have recently teamed-up on a joint project funded by a SSHRC Partnership Engagement Grant. Entitled “Making Meaning Out of Punishment: Exhibit Curation, Tour Guide Work and Visitor Engagement at the Ottawa Jail Hostel”, the project involves the creation of a new tour script and exhibits at the former Carleton County Gaol that is now home to the hostel. It also explores how meanings of penality conveyed at the site, both old and new, shape visitor engagement.

A survey has been developed as part of the visitor engagement component of the project. If you’ve recently participated in a tour of the former Carleton County Gaol led by guides employed by the HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel, you’re encouraged to complete the visitors’ survey in English or in French.
