JAIL hotline releases new report recommending free calling for Ontario prisoners

The Criminalization and Punishment Education Project’s Jail Accountability & Information Line, which takes calls from people held at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre and their loved ones from 1-4pm on weekdays, released a new report documenting the problems with the existing collect-call Ontario jail and prison telephone system. The report recommends the establishment of free calling in provincial jails and prisons in Ontario as a solution to the disconnection and economic hardship experienced by prisoners and their families caused by the current system. To learn more about the need for free calling to keep people connected on both sides of jail and prison walls, consult the press release, the report and a recent story in the Ottawa Citizen.
